I know I haven't finished the tour blog, which will probably never happen, but hey, it was a difficult trying to make it this far. So we are playing a lot of shows in Iowa City lately... why or why not, the offers have come and we accepted, mostly because the bands are cool. As a band we don't really like burning the locals on our music, but hey you only live once right. So after these next round of shows, we are going to try not to play live as much until after we re-record Iron Mountain in June. We need to finish writing this monster and thats the only way it's going to happen. The Ghaust and Ur split are still being worked on. There were some new gear purchases since we started so we may be re-tracking some material. The Ghaust split should be out by this summer on Cactus Records. Still in the process of finding a label for the Ur split so more info on that coming soon or later. So if your in the IC area come out to the show with East of the Wall, Goes Cube, and I Blame the Sea, should be a good time.

Day 13 - Greenbrier, TN

Don't ever play Loudhouse Coffee if you can help it!!! What was really awesome was hooking up with Brian at Kaosradioaustin.org. The venue was in a pretty sketchy part of Houston. We were instructed by the guy at the venue to go left down the street if we wanted to get something to eat. The show was decent minus the nu-metal band that was playing when we arrived. They played a song about Obama and his socialist government. The next morning while standing outside the 11 Worth Diner, Drew, Eric and Matt were approached by a very intoxicated women asking if they knew a guy named Sean. From the very opening of “Black Heart” to the final sounds of “Fire to Flames” I’m hooked on these songs: ambient metal that has a drive and enough low end to earn its heaviness. The songs are somewhat hypnotic with the repeating riffs, then there are the sounds that come washing over the buzzing distortion, providing another layer. Good stuff for putting on late, late at night, and pondering the past, present, and future. I could definitely go for a full-on Aseethe LP. Shores Of The Tundra, for some reason, don’t do much for me. They’re not horrible; it’s just not “my thing.” They remind me of Godflesh, with the drum machines and other electronics. The songs pulse then explode with an almost epic feel, like something you would hear as the soundtrack for a movie set in a bleak future. Limited to 300 copies and packaged in a screen printed cover, so if this is your thing, get on it. –Matt Average

Shores of the Tundra / Aseethe Winter Tour

Drawings by Kevin Hansen (Shores, Monocle). />Back from my 2 week stint on the East Coast with label mates Shores of the Tundra. I feel rather lucky right now for all the incredible people that helped us out along the way. It restores my faith in the underground music scene when people are willing to interrupt their daily lives to help out a relatively unknown group of bands. This tour re-established why I do this in the first place, so thanks!!!!

So what's next? I will be spending the next couple months working on new material and other collaborations. The new material is going to kick people in the teeth!!!!

Also I am very excited to announce that Aseethe is now a duo, long time friend and former band mate Eric Diercks (Law of all Ends, Terraseethe, Showering Ashes, Coronation) will be manning the drums and other instruments. Eric also played drums on Ill Omen. At the moment we will be collaborating from a distance. I will still be performing solo for a few shows on the West Coast this year to finish up supporting current releases.

Live Photo by Chris Bassett.

Cheers!

Snarling Dog

It's a little over a week before I make my journey back to the Midwest to begin tour with Shores of the Tundra. Needless to say I am excited to get back out on the road and support the split 12" with them. I still have a full week of screen printing the record jackets, and rehearsal, but I feel like I have never been this prepared for a tour yet. As a side note I will be mixing in a cover of Sex, God, Sex by the Swans on tour. I have wanted to cover this song for years, and I feel that now is the appropriate time to do so.

On yet another note I am still hard at work on new material, especially the collaboration with my good friend Greg Ratajczak (Plague Bringer, Crucifagium). The material we are coming up with is in a surprising new direction, but still rooted in Greg s and my self s early influences. I think people will be pleasantly surprised when this release sees the light of day. More soon on that.

As for new Aseethe material I am feeling a bit more like a snarling dog, hence the title of this blog. Most of the material so far has been pretty laid back, but I feel like kicking people in the teeth once again. So look for all new material, with the exception of the Jerusalem split, to be heavier and darker then ever.

-Brian

Aseethe / Shores of the Tundra Split 12"

Out Feb 10th on Scenester Credentials & AROS Records. Last night went really well, Jordan and I have some amazing guitar tones coming out of the monitors. Those of you who heard the tour version of Black Heart will be really surprised when you here the final version. The guitar, drums and bass sound bigger and heavier.

Songs from the Jerusalem split will be posted soon. Jim is finishing up his side and is doing the artwork, which looks amazing. We have a few prospective labels to help put this out, but nothing solidified yet. Keeping checking back in the next few weeks as this project develops.

The first Aseethe full length titled "Iron Mountain" will be coming out sometime next year on Scene Cred. Artwork will be by none other than Seldon Hunt. Needless to say I am really excited to have him working the project. I will be recording and rerecording some lengthy tracks for a few releases I have listed below.

Black Heart - Shores Split 7" - Feb 09 Release
Who Will Die First & Untitled Track - Jerusalem Split - ?
Untitled Track - 5 way Split - ?
Untitled Track - Noise/Relief Comp - ?
Untitled Track - Iowa/Illinois Comp - ?

I can say this will be a diverse set of pieces. I feel I have come along way since "Ill Omen", but still feel like I have so far to go. Often the time constraints alone on these endeavors seem to restrict the writing process. Thoughts of starting a whole other solo project centered around improvisational horror/doom/noise have come to mind but have been thwarted. I started Aseethe last year as an all encompassing vehicle for my musical creativity, no matter what direction or genre it may lead me to. So thanks for listening so far, 2009 is going to be a busy year.

Tour Dates are also on the way.

StonerRock.com Review

Aseethe/Mauul - Navitas Est Deus Split LP
Review by Nick DeMarino (StonerRock.com)
Scenester Credentials
Release Date: July 2008

I know what you’re thinking - two one man bands, each with a single track pressed on an obscenely limited split (109) released by a tongue-in-cheek record label - this is going to be pretentious drivel. But it’s not.

Fortunately, Aseethe (Brian Barr) and Mauul (Phil Mauul) opt for experimentation that’s palatable, engaging, and ultimately worth more than a couple of shock-your-brain listens. Aseethe’s “Ill Omen” is the natural synthesis of amplifier worship, noise, and shoegaze. The mighty guitar riffs have great overtones, the keyboards sustain delicate melodies, and noise tweaks create cacophonous counter points. The live drums lend a strong groove to the music that is absent from similar endeavors, and give the music a sense of urgency. The noisy interludes are sandwiched between monster riffs and beautiful melodies, “Ill Omen” is expressive in a manner similar to Jesu, but is ultimately more varied and cathartic.

Mauul’s contribution is “Filament,” an experimental track that’s half warm, easy listening and half fiddling-with-the-input-jack glitch. Not only is it full of warm tones, but it’s ambient enough to enjoy with completely shattering musical sensibilities and expectations. The last third of “Filament” is the most interesting (you can fill in “varied” or “challenging” if you prefer). Both Aseethe and Mauul offer genuine, experimental music that’s not just accessible, but damn good.

Aseethe // Shores of the Tundra Split Delays

The 7" is put on hold for a couple of months due to unforeseen circumstances so there will be a limited run of 100 CDR copies available for tour including two bonus tracks from both asts 12" releases. This will be my first shows in almost a year. I am really excited to head back to the Midwest and play with my friends and tour with Shores of the Tundra. Even more exciting is the slough of releases I have coming out for this tour. I will also have my sister Michelle playing guitar on a few of the dates. She has played with me before in Zhilla and Law of all Ends.

I will also be posting new shirt designs and artwork for my split with Monocle (Kevin from Shores of the Tundra). After which the recording will be sent to Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Studios for production and then sent to Carl Saff for mastering. Along the way I have started working on various other projects that will hopefully see the light of day by the end of 2009. Here is just a short list of releases in the works.

-Mauul Split (In Production)
-Jerusalem Split (Writing & Recording)
-Aseethe Digital Release
-Torturer/Aseethe Collaboration Digital Release
-Torturer/Boar Triad
-Throne of Lions Split
-Shores of the Tundra/Mauul Triad
-Hellas Mounds Collaboration
-John Flood & More 5 Way Split

These are a few project that have been discussed. I have also been playing synth in a band called Ship and Coast here in the Bay Area, although I am not an official member yet. Also Jordan (Occam's Razor), Davy (Loma Prieta) & I are starting a band. We don't know what we are going to sound like yet.

The Shores of the Tundra / Aseethe Tour is in the works. I am also working out a Westcoast tour for November. More info on that to come.

To Dream Shirts Available Online

Shirts are available on the myspace page. $15 includes shipping. The music is far more dynamic then the last release. Think Eluvium meets Buried at Sea meets Xasthur....thats right.... elements of black metal. You didn't think I went soft did you? So with that said what is next. Well I will be hitting the road as hard as I can, mostly West Coast dates, but I will be hitting the Midwest in the fall for a couple of dates with Shores of the Tundra. No one instrument can stand on its own, so you end up with a cluster-fuck in some cases. Plus I was playing in a hardcore band at the time, I kept trying to stear it in a lighter direction but none of the other members were into it. Idealistically; I wanted to see what I could do on my own. To quote Michael Gira, "you have no one to blame but yourself if you fail".

There is certainly a freedom to it that a lot of musicians love.. did that play a part?

Yes there is. If I want to play a show or go on tour it is up to me to decide. The music and the artwork is all my decision.

What are the postive and negative aspects to playing solo?

Pros; I do what I want. Period. Cons; Because I play Aseethe live I have to make sure I can follow the prerecorded music, so I have to spend a lot more time planning everything out. It can be real frustrating because the process is so unnatural to me. Plus I take the Sunno)) approach with big heavy cabinets. I want to sound like a full band without depending on PA support, so that can be straining on the back. In the end it's worth it, and it helps me stand out from the pack.

What releases are you currently working on and what do people have to look forward to in the future?

The Mauul split 12" will be out on Scenester Credentials on April 1st. I am currently working on the Jerusalem split and an all electronic release for download. After that another split with you (John Flood) and then a full length. There is also some talk of another collaboration with Torturer and the band Hellas Mounds. I have about 8 hours worth of bits and pieces. The Jerusalem split will be more guitar driven than the last release. Expect some of the same amplifier worship with some softer sides. Scenester Credentials has expressed interest in future releases but nothing is slated yet. I also just did vocals on the new Loam Prieta LP.

You recently relocated to san francisco from iowa city. So far, has the area been kind musically to you? With the scenery change from lack of culture to overloaded with culture, has it affected your playing?

I have only been here for little over a month. But so far it's been good. I just started playing with this band called Us, Haunted Bodies. Kind of in the vein of Pg 99 and Orchid. It feels good to have that for some cartharsis since Aseethe is more operatic and slow. I was lucky to already have friends here in SF. Culturally it's not the Midwest. I was very comfortable in Iowa. I had plenty of friends and opportunities to tour, but I think this move will make me work harder to succeed. Most of my gear is in storage until the end of the month so It has effected my writing. I have mostly spent countless hours working on a good drum sound for the next record. I will be taking all of April off from doing extra graphic design project to finish writing and record the Jerusalem split.

I had heard you were thinking of making A Seethe a full member band. Is there any truth to that?

I played with the idea of adding people. But no. It would defeat the whole purpose of my great experiment. It would be the easy way out to add members. Maybe if I can afford to hire people in the future. HA.

What are you currently listening to? When you are writing, do you tend to listen to something specific or anything in general?

I have been listening to Mono, Eluvium, Junius, Coffin Dancer, Hellas Mounds and Minor Threat for good measure. My fellow musicians have been great influences to me. There is some new and old stuff out there that I need to listen too, but I never have much time anymore. When writing I just try and block music out. That way I can keep the ideas coming as original as possible.

Where do you plan to take the music on future releases?

I am just letting the music evolve on its own. I have been playing without distortion lately. More gear, bigger sounds, maybe more hope and not so much doom and gloom, but who I doubt it.

Are there any outside events that inspire your writing? i.e. politics, religion, society, etc?

Politics is a big part of my life, I hate it and love to talk about it. It is hard not to get depressed about it. I believe there is a shadow government, so the elections don't even matter to me that much. The only difference between the two parties is that if a democrat ends up in office we won't have to deal with the religious fanatics running amok trying to change laws that effect you and myself based on their supposed moral code. The ideas and artwork behind the Aseethe Mauul split is based on the energy, masons, money, govenment and of course the Great Sine.

Sound and emotion move me musically, all of the above just comes second hand, If they do influence me it would be at surface level.

Who are you voting for in the next election? Is it all over? Are we doomed now?

I caucused for Ron Paul, but he doesn't have a chance in hell. I will vote for Barack Obama if he ends up getting the nomination. I probably won't vote if it comes down to McCain and Clinton. Both inbred elites cut from the same cloth.

How important is the message in music compared to the overall aural/ visual experience of it? I used to think the message was important earlier in life, but now I would rather provide some kind of experience for the listener/ observer.. what do you think?

Both, I wouldn't be the same person if it wasn't for the Punk/Hardcore community. I believe words and music have the power to inspire. But they can also stand on their own. Having people experience your live show is important as well. I think fans in general want more then just whats commited to wax. But I could be wrong. At least it's that way for me. Matt and I from Scene Cred were talking tonight about one of our favorite shows being Pg 99. Everyone had a great time and experienced what punk/hardcore is supposed to be, ideas, community and playing loud.

With the ever decreasing attention span of the kids/ adults, how do you go about keeping them interested playing what you play since what we do is kind of an acquired taste?

I think there is an audience for it. Especially with bands like Sunno)) Eluvium and Jesu doing well. I think the people that search our kind of music out are looking for more then just music to mosh to. No matter what I do I am still a punk kid at heart. So fast short songs are always fun.

Lastly, are there any closing comments?

Ya, buy my record and check out my friends bands.... they are doing amazing stuff. Also stay warm and classy Midwest.

ASEETHE WELCOMES YOU!

Due to my laziness and lack of time I will be posting all things going on with Aseethe and Clean Milk Design here. So for now here is a recap of things to come.

Aseethe
I am currently working on the music for the Jerusalem split. The music thus far has taken the project into new directions. This will be a far more ambient release than the Mauul split. My friend and fellow Us Haunted Bodies band mate Jordan will be recording the final guitars. Mixing will be done by Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Recording and mastering by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering. There is no label as of yet but some interested parties popping up. More on that info coming soon. Speaking of the Mauul split I should be receiving my test pressing soon. I still have to screen the jackets once they come from the pressing plant so this album will see the light of day in late April.

Clean Milk Design
The bane of my existence at the moment, but lots of stuff to be posted soon. I am currently working on projects for Between Two Skies, The Horde and Sangre Mal.
